There was a time when you developed a cataract in your eye, it was inevitable that you would lose your sight in it, and there was nothing that you could do. However, technology has advanced so that now people have various options of repairing an eye with a cataract, using technology such as a foldable intraocular lens. If you are suffering from a cataract in one or both of your eyes, you will need to see a specialist and below is what you can expect when you do.

What Is A Cataract?

A cataract is where the proteins in the lens start to degrade, making the lens go cloudy and impair the sufferer’s vision. It takes a while to progress, and the patient will notice a gradual change in the sight, with it going cloudy slowly. However, you can easily fix it if you visit an optician who can refer you to a specialist surgeon to repair your damaged lens.

Repairing A Lens With A Cataract

When you undergo the procedure to repair a cataract, there are two methods that the surgeon can use, and they will discuss this before starting the operation. The first one is to make a tiny incision and use an ultrasound probe to break up the lens and then use suction to remove it. The second procedure is where the surgeon will make an incision in the eye and remove the lens in one piece. Your surgeon can use various lenses to replace the damaged lens, and you can find out more information by clicking here.

What To Expect After Cataract Surgery?

After you undergo cataract surgery, you will notice a distinct improvement in your vision, and colours will seem brighter and more vivid. However, you can expect your sight to be blurry for the first couple of days while recovering from the procedure. You will often see the specialist again a couple of days after the procedure to check on your recovery, and you will also go back after a week, and usually a month. You can feel discomfort with your eyes after the surgery, and it is common to have an itching feeling in your eyes, but the eye drops you will be prescribed will help reduce this feeling.

You may also need to wear an eye patch for a couple of days to help your eye recover after the surgery, but it will not be long till you can see unimpaired again, and vision is almost back to normal.
